Investigations of a Dog

Fantasy manifests itself via talking and singing dogs in “Investigations of a Dog.” Through the perspective of the narrator we experience a variety of memories from the past, which reveal the lack of direction and confidence that the protagonist has. Throughout the story, the narrator uses a rational process to attempt to solve questions about its existence. Its peers were content to leave these unanswered. Particularly in this story, the narrator’s desire to attain a truer form of meaning leads to a place of uncertainty, one where answers are beyond reach. This impossibility is a reflection of Kafka’s vision in that reality alone doesn’t hold all our answers.
